ALIBABA: GLOBAL EXPANSION AND SUCCESS IN OVERSEAS MARKETS
Alibaba.com, the platform that connects Chinese and foreign suppliers with wholesale buyers abroad (usually trade agents, wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers and SMEs engaged in import and export), recorded more than 40 million buyers across 190 countries during 2022. In the second quarter of 2023, Alibaba’s overseas businesses, including Lazada and AliExpress, posted strong growth, marking the success of the company’s global expansion amid ongoing structural reorganisation. According to the financial report released by Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group (AIDC), the subsidiary that oversees Alibaba’s overseas online marketplaces, the company generated revenue of 3.05 billion dollars in the second quarter of 2023, up 41% on the previous year.
Alibaba’s remarkable success abroad during the year is largely due to the introduction of the “Choice” model on AliExpress. AliExpress Choice, launched in March 2023, offers users a curated selection of the best products on the site, with free shipping in certain countries and a new monthly shopping event called “Choice Day”. This new model has been particularly well received in South Korea, where AliExpress overtook local platform Coupang to become the country’s most downloaded shopping app in March. Alibaba’s new initiatives are also performing very well, such as Miravia, launched on the Spanish market at the end of 2022. Miravia took first place among shopping apps on the Spanish App Store, while AliExpress ranked as the third most downloaded app.
In the coming months Alibaba Group will make Europe its top priority, focusing on building local businesses and online platforms outside China, the e-commerce giant’s president has said.
“What we will focus on most in the future is building local businesses, so you will see something called TMall, which we have in China, become TMall in Europe, which means we will serve local brands and customers in local markets,” J. Michael Evans said at a high-tech conference in Paris.
The e-commerce giant’s activities will be split into one division covering Alibaba’s domestic e-commerce marketplaces and another focusing on overseas marketplaces such as Lazada, which serves Southeast Asia, and AliExpress.
The exceptional growth of Alibaba’s overseas business in the second quarter of 2023 shows the success of the company’s global expansion strategy. With a 41% increase in revenue, Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group delivered an outstanding performance, underlining its ongoing commitment to giving international customers high-quality shopping experiences. The introduction of the “Choice” model on AliExpress, together with the successful launch of initiatives such as Miravia in the Spanish market, contributed significantly to these positive results. Despite uncertainty over the global economy after COVID, Alibaba is proving resilient and proactive in pursuing its mission of creating value for customers around the world. The company now looks to the future with great optimism and a renewed commitment to serving local brands and customers in European markets, further consolidating its global presence.
