TEMU: THE REVOLUTIONARY CHINESE E-COMMERCE PLATFORM
In the vibrant landscape of Chinese e-commerce, innovative new platforms keep emerging. Among them, Temu stands out: a solution that is rapidly gaining popularity and attracting the attention of consumers and entrepreneurs alike. Temu was launched by Kuaishou, one of the largest video-sharing platforms in China. Kuaishou is known for its vast user base and its ability to engage users through short videos. The company therefore decided to capitalise on this user base to enter the e-commerce sector with Temu.
The platform stands out for its futuristic vision. It is not just an e-commerce site but a complete ecosystem that aims to revolutionise the way consumers interact with brands. By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality, Temu creates an engaging, interactive shopping experience. One of Temu’s distinctive features is its strong emphasis on personalisation. The platform uses advanced algorithms to analyse consumers’ purchasing behaviour and offer highly relevant product suggestions. This targeted approach ensures that every consumer feels unique and valued. Temu actively promotes the sharing of user-generated content. Customers can share their shopping experiences through reviews, photos and videos. This not only lets consumers influence other people’s purchasing decisions but also creates a community of shopping enthusiasts. One of the key factors behind Temu’s rapid rise in popularity is its effective marketing strategy. The platform’s approach involved running an extensive advertising campaign on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. By February 2023, more than 13,000 ads had been shown on these platforms. To get more people buying, the platform also promotes limited-time offers every day that disappear shortly after launch; the aim was to encourage customers to grab them while they are still available.
As Temu continues its rapid global expansion, fellow e-commerce giant AliExpress feels seriously threatened by the newcomer’s rapid success. Although both platforms are known for competitive prices, AliExpress charges a commission of 5% to 8% on every sale. In contrast, Temu operates without commissions, allowing businesses and merchants to offer products at even more competitive prices than their counterparts. Temu also often manages to guarantee free delivery options and boasts faster average shipping, further increasing its appeal for customers looking for efficient, cost-effective shopping. However, it is important to note that Temu, being a relatively newer app, has not yet caught up with AliExpress in terms of user volume. For example, in August 2023 the Pinduoduo-owned app recorded 267 million visits to its website, while Alibaba’s e-commerce platform recorded almost 800 million in the same period.
Exporting Chinese Brands to the World
Temu has global ambitions. It is not content with serving only the Chinese market, but aims to promote and export high-quality Chinese brands all over the world. This initiative offers an exceptional opportunity for local brands to expand their international presence. With a strong emphasis on personalisation, sustainability and user-generated content, Temu promises to redefine Chinese e-commerce. Unsurprisingly, it is rapidly winning an enthusiastic following among consumers and brands worldwide.
